WATCH | How will Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan shape a walkable, sustainable future?
Dubai is set to undergo a major urban transformation with the implementation of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, focusing on enhancing walkability, sustainability, and quality of life.
During the 33rd meeting of the Supreme Committee for Urban Planning, chaired by Mattar Al Tayer, key strategies and projects were reviewed, aligning with the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to position Dubai as a leading global city.
One of the most significant projects is the ‘Dubai Walk’ master plan, which will introduce 6,500 kilometres of pedestrian pathways across 160 areas. The first phase includes:
- Al Ras Loop: A 15-kilometre route connecting historical landmarks, including a five-kilometre waterfront section.
- Future Loop: A two-kilometre air-conditioned bridge near the Museum of the Future, linking 10 key locations.
Other key initiatives include the ‘Super Block’ pilot project in areas like Al Fahidi, Al Karama, and Al Quoz Creative Zone, as well as the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) plan, optimising land use around Metro stations to support sustainable transport.
Additionally, the Dubai Metro Blue Line – a 30-kilometre expansion with 14 stations – will serve nine residential and development areas, accommodating a projected one million residents by 2040.
The Supreme Committee also highlighted major economic and lifestyle projects, including:
- Therme Dubai: Set to become the world’s largest interactive resort and park, attracting 1.7 million visitors annually.
- Housing and Infrastructure Developments: Planning of 17,400 residential plots, improved approval systems for real estate projects, and 450 million square feet allocated for citizen housing.
The Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan aims for a 105% increase in green spaces, a 134% expansion in hospitality and tourism, and a 400% growth in public beaches, reinforcing Dubai’s position as a sustainable, pedestrian-friendly, and globally competitive city.
